Build 3D scenes and import assets in Blender using natural language commands
Imagine telling Blender to 'create a dungeon scene where a dragon guards treasure' and watching the AI write code to place objects and apply materials. This tool acts as a bridge between AI and Blender, allowing users to direct 3D work without writing code themselves. Environments previously using blender-mcp continue to work without configuration changes, while new installations use the mcp-for-blender package.
Two components connecting Blender and AI
The system consists of an add-on that runs a socket server inside Blender and an MCP server that controls it. Instructions sent by the AI are converted into JSON-formatted commands and passed to Blender, which then creates or modifies objects accordingly. The user's chosen LLM client (such as Claude or Cursor) communicates in real time with Blender, handling complex 3D tasks via natural language instructions. In this process, the AI manipulates the scene by directly calling Blender's API or executing Python code.
Integration of free assets and AI-generated models
Materials, lighting, and models needed for a Blender scene can be imported directly from external sources.
- Poly Haven Provides approximately 2,400 free CC0 HDRIs, textures, and models. No API key or account is required, and the search function understands intent to find relevant assets.
- Poly Pizza Hosts approximately 10,600 free low-poly models. It is suitable for game-style stylized assets and can be used after registering for a free API key.
- AI 3D Generation Generates 3D models from text prompts using Hyper3D Rodin and Hunyuan3D. Settings must be adjusted according to the Tencent Cloud account type.
Installation and connection process
Installation requires the uv package manager, which must be installed via the official installer. Run the MCP server with the uvx mcp-for-blender command and install the Blender add-on with uvx mcp-for-blender install-addon. After enabling the add-on in Blender, open the sidebar in the 3D viewport by pressing the N key and click 'Start MCP Server' to complete the connection. You must register the MCP server address in the configuration file for each client, and clients run via GUI may need to specify the full path to uvx.
Security and stability considerations
This tool allows AI to execute arbitrary Python code in Blender, so caution is needed in untrusted environments. By default, the AI can perform risky tasks such as file reading/writing, network access, and executing external programs. Setting the BLENDER_MCP_SAFE_MODE=1 environment variable blocks such dangerous code before execution and sends the blocking reason to the AI to attempt corrected code. Since the socket server lacks authentication or encryption, it is recommended to run it only on localhost or connect securely via an SSH tunnel. Always save the scene before working, and breaking complex tasks into small steps helps reduce errors.
