Consolidate free AI quotas to reduce coding tool token costs
Stop managing free limits across individual AI services by setting up a single address. OmniRoute is a gateway that connects your free or paid AI accounts into one endpoint. When you link coding tools like Claude Code or Cursor to this address, the system automatically finds the most suitable model to handle requests.
v3.8.52 Update and New Features
The recent v3.8.52 version adds headless mode and a model discovery API. Headless mode runs only the proxy engine without a dashboard, making it suitable for server environments. You can also quickly find models matching specific conditions via the /v1/models/query endpoint. This version supports over 375 providers and 1,475 model IDs, and the free tier catalog has expanded to 468 items.
Automatic Routing and Combo Strategy
The core of OmniRoute is the concept of a 'combo'.
- Automatic Combo Engine Without separate user configuration, it evaluates the healthiest path among connected providers in real time to route requests.
- Quota-Aware Scheduling It tracks the remaining quota for each provider, automatically skipping accounts that have hit their limits and distributing processing to others.
- Token Compression It applies RTK and Caveman compression technologies to reduce the number of transmitted tokens by 15 to 95%, cutting costs.
Integration with Coding Tools
The tool supports more than 37 coding agents and CLI tools, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Cline, and Copilot. Using the omniroute run command allows you to run a specific tool with a desired model without modifying configuration files. For example, entering omniroute run claude --model openai/gpt-5.4 immediately configures Claude Code to use the GPT-5.4 model. You can also natively select OmniRoute models in VS Code's Copilot Chat, allowing you to utilize various models while maintaining your existing workflow.
Installation and Runtime Environment
OmniRoute can be installed globally via npm or run as a Docker container. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ARM-based devices like Raspberry Pi, and Android's Termux. A desktop app (Electron) and a macOS menu bar app (OmniRouteTray) are also provided to help keep the server running stably in the background. After installation, connect provider accounts and generate an API key in the dashboard; entering this key into your coding tool's API endpoint completes the setup.
Pre-Usage Checks
OmniRoute is released under the MIT license, allowing free use. However, the 'free tokens' provided by this tool are not issued by OmniRoute itself but are an aggregation of the free tiers from each AI provider you have directly signed up for. Therefore, you must check each provider's terms of service and regional restrictions. Additionally, some providers may reject third-party client access or allow it only for specific purposes, so it is advisable to review the provider's policy before connecting. You can check the currently available pool and limits in real time on the dashboard's free tier page.
