Build Python APIs with automatic documentation using type hints
Declaring types on function parameters automatically generates data validation, conversion, and interactive documentation that can be tested directly in the browser. FastAPI is a framework for building web APIs based on standard Python type hints. It increases coding speed without complex configuration and reduces errors during development, allowing for immediate application in production environments.
Automation from a single type declaration
FastAPI provides multiple features simultaneously by simply declaring standard Python types for function parameters and return values. Input data validation, automatic conversion between network data and Python objects, and editor autocomplete support all stem from this single declaration. For example, writing item_id: int verifies that the path parameter is an integer and returns a clear error message to the client if an invalid value is received. Additionally, defining complex model classes like Item automatically validates and converts nested JSON structures. This process allows you to use existing Python knowledge without learning separate syntax or library methods.
API documentation viewable directly in the browser
When the server runs, interactive documentation based on Swagger UI is automatically generated at the http://127.0.0.1:8000/docs address. On this screen, you can view API endpoints, click the 'Try it out' button to enter parameters, and then click 'Execute' to send an actual request and see the results immediately. The /redoc path also provides alternative documentation based on ReDoc, helping team members or clients easily understand the API. Because it is based on the OpenAPI standard, this documentation information can also be used for client code generation systems in other languages.
Installation and execution
To install FastAPI, first install uv and then run the uv add "fastapi[standard]" command. The standard group includes essential dependencies for development, such as the uvicorn server and fastapi-cli. If you prefer pip, you can install fastapi[standard] within a virtual environment. To run the server, use the uv run fastapi dev command. This command automatically detects the main.py file, starts the Uvicorn server, and operates in a development mode that automatically restarts when files change.
Performance and production application
According to independent TechEmpower benchmarks, FastAPI applications running on Uvicorn are evaluated as one of the fastest Python frameworks, excluding Starlette and Uvicorn themselves. According to tests by the internal development team, feature development speed improves by approximately 200% to 300%, and errors caused by developers are estimated to decrease by about 40%. Thanks to this performance and stability, several organizations such as Microsoft, Netflix, and Spotify have adopted FastAPI for production ML services or crisis management frameworks. It is distributed under the MIT license, allowing free use in commercial projects.
Considerations before implementation
FastAPI depends on two core libraries, Starlette and Pydantic, so understanding how these two technologies work is helpful. Using the standard installation group installs uvicorn and fastapi-cli together, but if you want to reduce unnecessary dependencies, you can install only the basics with uv add fastapi or choose fastapi[standard-no-fastapi-cloud-cli]. If you want to deploy to the cloud, you can upload to FastAPI Cloud using the uv run fastapi deploy command, but this is a separate service operated by the FastAPI team. To deploy to other cloud providers, you must refer to their guides. When using asynchronous code (async/await), remember to use async def in the function definition.
