Terminal multiplexer for AI agents

Keep coding agents working in the terminal without interruption

A background server keeps the terminal alive even if you close the window or the SSH connection drops, so agent tasks do not stop. herdr is a runtime that manages the terminals where agents run, allowing you to view agents from multiple machines in a single window. It notifies you when an agent is stuck and provides a structure for interacting with other agents.

Work continues even if the connection drops

The background server keeps the terminal running even if you close the client or the SSH connection drops. If the server or device restarts, you can restore the saved layout and resume supported agent sessions. However, the original process does not survive a restart. If an agent is stopped waiting for a response, herdr explicitly indicates this state, making it easy to find the blocked part.

Manage agents from multiple machines in one window

It maintains local work and saved SSH machines together, providing an integrated agent list and independent reconnection capabilities. You can check the status of agents on each machine in one place, making remote work management easier. It supports tmux-style prefix keys as well as mouse clicks, dragging, and splitting, allowing you to choose the input method according to the situation.

Agents operate herdr directly

Agents control herdr through the CLI and socket API. Agents can create new panes, exchange prompts with each other, and wait until another agent is actually stuck. You can run existing agents like claude code, codex, cursor, opencode, and grok as they are; herdr does not wrap or replace them but only owns the terminal. You can also extend panes and workflows through the plugin marketplace.

Installation and execution

Written in Rust as a single binary, it runs in your existing terminal without Electron. You can install it with the curl -fsSL https://herdr.dev/install.sh | sh command, or use brew install herdr and mise use -g herdr. On Windows, you can install it via a PowerShell script. After installation, start it with the herdr command, detach with ctrl+b q, and run herdr again to reconnect.

Things to check before use

It is distributed under the Apache License 2.0, and developers can build it with cargo build --release and run tests with just test. Since the original process is not maintained when resuming an agent session, you should understand the scope of state restoration. For agents to operate herdr, they must have a structure that supports the CLI and socket API; the list of supported agents can be found in the documentation. You can inquire about enterprise partnerships via email.
