prisma/orm

TypeScript database ORM library

Enable AI agents to manage database schemas and queries directly

This setup allows AI agents to handle the entire process of creating data models and writing queries from prompts. Prisma 8 is a release candidate for the existing Prisma ORM, rewritten in TypeScript, and designed with workflows for collaborating with AI agents as the default. Developers can simply instruct the agent to understand the project and modify the data layer without complex configuration.

Current status and support scope of Prisma 8

Prisma 8 is currently in the release candidate (RC) stage, with the final version 8.0.0 scheduled to launch within the next 4 to 8 weeks. During this period, breaking changes may be included, but the team explains that they are handling bugs urgently and that the absence of unimplemented features is the only risk. Currently, Prisma 8 supports PostgreSQL and MongoDB as first-class targets, while SQLite is at the proof-of-concept stage and MySQL is planned for support later.

Database work with AI agents

Installation begins with the npm create prisma or npx prisma orm init commands, which require Node.js 24 or higher and a package manager. These commands generate Prisma configuration files and an initial contract in the project, and place a skill file readable by AI agents in the project root. Various agent runtimes, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot Agent, and Devin, automatically load this skill, so when a user requests to "add a posts model and connect it to users," the agent checks the contract and query references before executing the changes to completion. Additionally, when reporting bugs or requesting features, the agent helps facilitate communication with the team by drafting a structured GitHub issue or providing a Discord link.

Extensible architecture and public SPI

Prisma 8 maintains a minimal core and builds all features, including PostgreSQL support, on a public SPI (Service Provider Interface). This provides developers with an official entry point to integrate their own tools, databases, and libraries with Prisma. Various extension packages, including vector search, geometry queries, BM25 full-text search, Supabase authentication, JSON validation, and searchable encryption, have already been released. The extension author guide details the SPI hierarchy and the process the team uses to feature new extensions, laying the foundation for the community to freely extend database functionality.

Things to check before adoption

Since Prisma 8 is a release candidate and not yet a final version, you must check the feature scoreboard for unsupported items before applying it to production environments. You should verify if you meet the relatively recent runtime requirement of Node.js 24 or higher, and if you are using databases other than the currently supported PostgreSQL and MongoDB, you should consider the timing of migration. It is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, and existing Prisma 7 projects can be migrated gradually, so it is recommended to start new projects with Prisma 8.
